The Surrender Tree
The Surrender Tree, this year’s surprise in the Newbery Honor lineup, was just named an honoree for the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award as well. With the Pura Belpre Award also under it’s belt, this makes you start to see how award committees can be on to something that passes the rest of us by (apparently nothing gets past Eva Perry Mock Newbery though!)
Criticas Magazine points out that Margarita Engle is the first Latina to win a Newbery Honor. Kind of jaw-dropping…and then not. Makes you realize the point of some of these awards…and see that each is still relevant in its own way.

Thanks for mentioning us Nina! We tried to catch all of the eligible books this year, and read 256 titles in all. Still somehow we missed After Tupac & D Foster by Jacqueline Woodson 🙂
