(1) SAME SUN HERE
(1) SEE YOU AT HARRY’S
(1) SERAPHINA
(1) SHADOW ON THE MOUNTAIN
(1) SUMMER ON THE MOON
(1) WOODEN BONES
Now give us your full list of seven, and I promise I won’t try to psychoanalyze anyone this time based on their nominations. Just peruse the aforementioned list, and build support around an existing title, or stretch us to more seriously consider an absent one.
I’m going to pass on the titles with more than six nominations, even though I could easily vote for some of them, namely LIAR & SPY. I could lend my support to many nonfiction titles, particularly TEMPLE GRANDIN, WE’VE GOT A JOB, and TITANIC, but I’m going to go with TEMPLE GRANDIN because it has the most nominations to date, and another one would push it into that next tier of contenders. For my other nomination, I’m going to pick CHICKADEE, a book that surprised me–and which has stayed with me. Increasingly, I’m thinking it’s possibly as distinguished as any middle grade novel out there, but I’d need another read to sure. So my nominations altogether are–

BENEATH A METH MOON
BOMB
CHICKADEE
MOONBIRD
NO CRYSTAL STAIR
TEMPLE GRANDIN
TWELVE KINDS OF ICE
Since BOMB, MOONBIRD, and NO CRYSTAL STAIR remain my top three, I would have nominated those regardless, but the rest are strategic, subject to the direction this particular mock super committee is headed in.

OK, let’s see, my five first nominations were:
BOMB
LIAR AND SPY
WE’VE GOT A JOB
TITANIC: VOICES FROM THE DISASTER
MR AND MRS BUNNY: DETECTIVES EXTRAORDINAIRE
My final two are:
PALACE OF STONE
MIGHTY MISS MALONE
both are among my favorites of the year, but I’m definitely voting for them to try to get them each more in the conversation, rather than voting for my actual next choice THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN
Kristin says
My top choices feel a bit strange to me on paper. I wouldn’t consider my bottom two choices as really appropriate for Newbery, which is why they’re at the bottom; they’re too mature in nature, but they were both great books overall. However, I don’t really feel that strongly about a lot of the possible choices out there. If somebody had to call me to the carpet about what I really believe are true Newbery contenders they would really only be Liar & Spy, Starry River of the Sky and Twelve Kinds of Ice. Humming Room and Wonder are good books, but they were just shy of excellent to me.
So, here’s my seven picks:
1-LIAR & SPY
2-STARRY RIVER OF THE SKY
3-TWELVE KINDS OF ICE
4-THE HUMMING ROOM
5-WONDER
6-CODE NAME VERITY
7-SERAPHINA
Brandy says
Bomb*
Liar & Spy*
Moonbird
No Crystal Stair
The One and Only Ivan
Splendors and Glooms
Water Sings Blue*
*The ones I personally like the most.
Monica Edinger says
Fine.
My first three were:
BOMB
LIAR & SPY
SPLENDORS AND GLOOMS
Next I went for:
EACH KINDNESS
JEPP, WHO DEFIED THE STARS (and so am delighted to see that others agree with me, say Nancy Werlin:)
To end two final favorites that may get a bit more attention with another vote or two or three…
THREE TIMES LUCKY
WE’VE GOT A JOB
Wendy says
Are we supposed to stick with our original choices, or can we start from scratch now?
Ed Spicer says
I haven’t played much this time around. Sorry. Craziness abounds. I have read much, however. So I don’t think it is cheating too much to pipe in now at the end, although I am going to post fast and not second guess myself. These are the books I am still thinking about for various reasons (number 8 would be a book I have not seen discussed here–but I won’t swear to it–The Peculiar). And while I have read quite a bit, I haven’t read everything yet–just reclaimed (actually purchased another copy) of Splendors and Glooms, which I will be reading soon:
1. Liar & Spy
2. Bomb
3. The One and Only Ivan
4. Moonbird
5. Each Kindness
6. Wonder
7. Seraphina
TeenReader says
From before:
WONDER
THE MIGHTY MISS MALONE
ABRAHAM LINCOLN & FREDERICK DOUGLASS
SPLENDORS & GLOOMS
REMARKABLE
To add:
Well, I guess since it’s between S&G and Bomb for my official favorite for the Newbery, I better lend my support to BOMB. And then…ugh, I have so much reading left to do, but I’ll go with TEMPLE GRANDIN, because that’s definitely in my top five right now, so I’d lend my support in hopes of it getting an honor.
Danyelle says
I would like to nominate eight, but since I can only choose seven . . .
Bomb
Liar & Spy
Crow
Splendors and Gloom
Starry River of the Sky
Temple Grandin
The One and Only Ivan
Eric says
First five were:
BOMB
LIAR & SPY
DUMPLING DAYS
Next two
SHADOW ON THE MOUNTAIN
CODE NAME VERITY
For the final two I’d like to add some support to the two funniest books of 2012:
MR AND MRS BUNNY
DANGER GOES BERSERK
Still hoping for single honor year this time around. I like my other nominations but feel that the top two are head and shoulders above everything else this year. I would be ecstatic if Sheinkin gets the medal and Stead nabs the only honor.
Cecilia says
My original three were:
SPLENDORS AND GLOOMS
BOMB
EACH KINDNESS
then I added
TEMPLE GRANDIN
STARRY RIVER OF THE SKY
I think my final two will be
TWELVE KINDS OF ICE
JEPP WHO DEFIED THE STARS
Richie Partington says
Bomb
The One and Only Ivan
Three Times Lucky
Moonbird
Same Sun Here
LIAR & SPY
EACH KINDNESS
Donna Miller says
Here are mine – in no particular order:
Summer of the Gypsy Moths
Liar and Spy
Each Kindness
Mighty Miss Malone
One for the Murphys
The Lions of Little Rock
Wonder
Sam Eddington says
I missed the last round, but if it’s all right, I’ll play this time.
TWELVE KINDS OF ICE
THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN
MOONBIRD
MR. AND MRS. BUNNY
WOODEN BONES
LIAR & SPY
and, if I may be allowed the liberty of adding one title that doesn’t have any votes, but that I feel strongly about,
BREATHING ROOM
These aren’t in any particular order as of yet. I’m still trying to measure my top few against each other in a way that satisfies me.
Benji Martin says
Here are my seven:
1. The One and Only Ivan
2. The Mighty Miss Malone
3. Splendors and Glooms
4. The Seven Tales of Trinket
5. Jepp, who Defied the Stars
6. Summer of the Gypsy Moths
7. One For the Murphys
Chelsea C. says
My other nominations were:
Bomb
Splendors and Glooms
Water Sings Blue
Chickadee
The Broken Lands
For my final two, I have to go with two that I just think are too good to ignore, even though they already have some support. So my final 7 would be:
Bomb
Splendors and Glooms
Water Sings Blue
Chickadee
The Broken Lands
Twelve Kinds of Ice
Starry River of the Sky
For what it’s worth, our staff Mock Newbery just held a first round vote to narrow down our shortlist, and our finalists are:
Bomb
Splendors and Glooms
Three Times Lucky
Twelve Kinds of Ice
Wonder
I was pretty surprised at what rose to the top. Liar & Spy, Ivan, and Starry River were almost there, but not quite.
Jonathan Hunt says
Wendy, yes, please keep the nominations you entered previously and then add two more–just for the sake of consistency. The real committee, of course, doesn’t have the luxury of changing their nominations, but then, too, the real committee not only has the benefit of having read more widely, but also knowing what has been suggested already. Perhaps a better model for the future would be to treat October and November nominations as something more than suggestions, but less than nominations, giving people the flexibility to change their mind before setting things in stone in December.
And, yes, Sam, if you missed either of the two previous rounds then feel free to chime in now with your full list of seven. Keep them coming and in several days I’ll complile the total results below.
Sondy says
Which was the post where we commented with our top 5? I can’t seem to remember what my 4th and 5th choices were….
Sondy says
I found it — Twelve Kinds of Meth post. https://blogs.slj.com/heavymedal/2012/11/12/twelve-kinds-of-meth/
Hmm. I’d pick a different top 5 voting now. Though I do know #6, but need to mull over things a bit for #7.
Genevieve says
Previously:
*LIAR & SPY
THREE TIMES LUCKY
THE MIGHTY MISS MALONE
*SPLENDORS AND GLOOMS
NO CRYSTAL STAIR
New additions:
*BOMB
WONDER
*=top choices
DaNae says
Oct:
Three Times Lucky
Summer of the Gypsy Moths
Splendors and Glooms
Nov:
Bomb
Temple Grandin
Dec:
Liar & Spy
The One and Only Ivan
Jepp and Chickadee are next my to read list. I’m glad the real committee doesn’t need to wait for late release dates.
BTW, guess where I will be Jan. 28th!
Cari says
I didn’t vote last time because I hadn’t read enough but here we go:
Liar & Spy
Splendors and Glooms
No Crystal Stair
Starry River of the Sky
The One and Only Ivan
Bomb
The Mighty Miss Malone
I just finished Splendors and Glooms yesterday but I was so sucked up into the story I can’t stop thinking about it, the same way that little bits of Liar & Spy keep coming back to me even though I read that one way back in September. I’m about half way through Moonbird and I am really enjoying it. I think it will probably bump The Mighty Miss Malone off of my list once I’m done with it. I am surprised that Summer of the Gypsy Moths is getting so much attention. I admit I didn’t finish it, so I guess I’ll have to pick it back up!
Sondy says
I’m not sure I’d make the same list now, but it’s easy to add two I’ve read in the last month. This gives me:
Palace of Stone
Summer of the Gypsy Moths
The One & Only Ivan
Mighty Mars Rovers
We’ve Got a Job
Starry River of the Sky
Twelve Kinds of Ice
Favorites? Well, hard to say. I think I’d be pretty open to discussion if I were on the committee. I should add that I still haven’t read Bomb, but hope my hold will come in before I take time off after Christmas.
Erin says
So, I don’t think I submitted my top five, but here are my top seven:
1: Child of the Mountains
2. Bomb
3. The One and Only Ivan
4. Three Times Lucky
5. Step Gently Out
6. Splendors and Glooms
7. One for the Murphy’s
Sherri T. says
My top seven:
1) Splendors and Glooms- the one to beat in my opinion- just lovely writing, interesting plot, slow reveals, great characters- can’t say enough good about this book.
2) Mr. and Mrs. Bunny, Detectives Extraordinaire- my personal favorite. I love the characters- Mrs. Bunny and her fedora slay me. And the Marmot? I’m buying a hardcover copy and I will read this one to my children.
3) Twelve Kinds of Ice- beautiful, evocative, nostalgic for adults but I think also very interesting for kids.
4) Summer of the Gypsy Moths- loved the first chapter especially, not as excited about the ending.
5) A Black Hole is Not a Hole- I really, really liked Moonbird and Bomb as well but I think I would have found them difficult to read as a child.
If I have to add two more I would say Three Times Lucky and The One and Only Ivan.
Martha says
To my previous nominations of:
Bomb
Moonbird
No Crystal Stair
Mr and Mrs Bunny
Code Name Verity
I add:
Splendors and Glooms
Chickadee
And I think the three books I could most successfully defend in an actual Newbery committee situation are Bomb, Splendors and Glooms, and, believe it or not, Mr. and Mrs. Bunny.
Nina Lindsay says
I didn’t participate in round 2 so feel like I’d be cheating getting into this round, but it is fun to think about those last two. Sometimes it’s about getting a title onto the table that you just think should be there for the discussion, a possible outlier (MR & MRS BUNNY? CODE NAME VERITY?). Could be one that you didn’t leap for on first read because it wasn’t flashy, but it’s just stuck in your mind and grown and grown (CHICKADEE). Sometimes, too, I’d consider a last nomination to go to one that’s already has clear and early support. It’s a way of getting behind it too, and also lending strength to your “outlier” titles by suggesting that those are the ones that stand up to the rest of the pack.
Julie Corsaro says
First five (actually, six — I cheated) were:
1) Twelve Kinds of Ice
2) Liar & Spy
3) Bomb
4) Temple Grandin
5) Wonder
6) Son
My seventh (I just read it) is Starry River of the Sky.
Cherylynn says
First five:
1.Splendors and Glooms
2. Kindred Souls
3. Wonder
4. Temple Grandin
5. Each Kindness
Two more
6. Starry River of the Sky
7. Moonbird
Wendy says
Original five:
NO CRYSTAL STAIR
JAKE & LILY
KINDRED SOULS
CHICKADEE
BOMB
Adding:
TITANIC: VOICES FROM THE DISASTER
THE GREAT UNEXPECTED
I would certainly think about MR. AND MRS. BUNNY, since it seems like there’s growing-but-still-small support there. And LIAR & SPY is in my “real” top list.
Georgie says
Original five:
1. One and Only Ivan
2.Liar and Spy
3.Great Unexpected
4.Splendors and Gloom
5.We’ve Got a Job
New:
6.Palace of Stone
7.Chickadee
Marcie Haloin says
Wonder
One and Only Ivan
Bomb
Mighty Miss Malone
Liar and Spy
Splendors and Glooms
Lions of Little Rock
Jonathan Hunt says

(19) BOMB
(16) LIAR & SPY
(16) SPLENDORS AND GLOOMS
(13) THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN
(8) WONDER
(8) TWELVE KINDS OF ICE

(1) STEP GENTLY OUT
(1) A BLACK HOLE IS NOT A HOLE
(1) SON
(1) JAKE & LILY
BOMB, LIAR & SPY, and SPLENDORS AND GLOOMS have consistenty rated as the top choices throughout all rounds of nominations, and they are always so close as to be virtually in a dead heat. THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN, however, has picked up one vote shy of a majority. The other big gainer here is TWELVE KINDS OF ICE which has undoubtedly been picking up readers since its November publication.

Ask and ye shall receive! I was off yesterday, but got everything updated this morning!
http://ow.ly/fs615
I will note that I counted 41 titles that had made two lists, but only see 35 above. All other numbers seem to match. I’m having a hard time sorting out what’s missing right now though. I’ll try to get back to that later.
If my math is correct 17 of Booklist’s 55 titles named were unique to that list (of course that may change when the Bulletin releases theirs). That struck me as a really high percentage for a list that size (31%) so I did a little math. PW has 11 of 40 unique for now (27.5%), SLJ 16 of their 65 (25%), Horn Book 2 of their 27 (7%). Kirkus has approximately a bazillion unique since their list is giant compared to the other journals. So Booklist is a little high, but not as much higher as I thought it might be.
So far 255 unique titles have been named by these five journals – and I’ve only read 25 of them so far – so much to read, so little time! I did recently finish Liar & Spy and loved it. Looking forward to what I’ll love next!
Jen J. says
Ok, figured out how to compare titles from Jonathan’s list to the spreadsheet.
I actually show 23 titles with three best lists:
I HAVE A DREAM moves from the 2-list list and A HOME FOR BIRD
I show 41 2-list titles with the following additions to Jonathan’s list above:
THE CHILDREN AND THE WOLVES
THE GIRL WITH BORROWED WINGS
GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE DINOSAURS
LULU AND THE DUCK IN THE PARK
NEVER FALL DOWN
SLEEP LIKE A TIGER
SUMMER OF THE GYPSY MOTHS
Jennifer P. says
My list:

LIAR & SPY
LIONS OF LITTLE ROCK
REMARKABLE
A BLACK HOLE IS NOT A HOLE
SUMMER OF THE GYPSY MOTHS
I feel good about these, so no judgy-judgy!!
Jonathan Hunt says
Thanks for the corrections, Jen. I double checked and amended the list above.
Jess says
SPLENDORS AND GLOOMS
LIAR AND SPY
THE HUMMING ROOM
SUMMER OF THE GYPSY MOTHS
STARRY RIVER OF THE SKY
MR. AND MRS. BUNNY
MOONBIRD
There are so many I haven’t had a chance to read yet, so I’m sure the list would look different if I’d read more widely this year (being a Cybils panelist is leading to a lot of fantasy and not much nonfiction/realistic fiction!)
Meghan says
I am among those who did not do the previous round (for which I blame pre-Christmas break elementary school festivities) but now have caught up with me reading and formulated this list:
1. Three Times Lucky
2. Mr and Mrs Bunny
3. Temple Grandin
4.Wonder
5. See You at Harry’s
6. The False Prince
7. The Great Unexpected
SO excited to see some support rallying for Mr and Mrs Bunny! I literally LOL-ed multiple times while reading it (dorky-yes, but it’s true). And I know this doesn’t factor in much, but Sophie Blackall’s illustrations were/are AMAZING! That girl’s got a Caldecott in her future 🙂

Well–confound it!–I’m using somebody else’s computer during the holidays, and the comments are gone now that I’ve returned from a little side trip. Most of them were from this thread–fortunately, I had recalculated the votes even if I didn’t write down the new ones. I’ve added Sam Leopold’s in, too. And here’s what we have.

The top four above are my top four. What I question is would they be my top four in a vacuum? Or am I under some sort of Heavy Medal mind control? Is this the committee process at work or am I just the kid who follows the crowd? Deep self-examination to ponder for the new year.
Sam B. says
I’m way, way late to this party, but just for fun I’m throwing my hat into the ring in support of Seraphina. What a brilliant piece of writing that is. It’s up there with No Crystal Stair, Moonbird and Liar & Spy on my personal list.
DaNae says
Sam, what would your opinion be at having Seraphina in a K-6 school library, realizing we have many YA books such as The Hunger Games, The Uglies, etc. . . ?
Sam B. says
Hey DaNae, based on the fact that you have Hunger Games, The Uglies, and so on, my opinion would be a yes: Seraphina belongs in your library.
