November Nominations

November 15, 2013 by Jonathan Hunt   61 comments

Okay, it’s time for us (and the real Newbery committee) to submit two more nominations for the month of November.  You’ll remember that my October strategy was to simply nominate the three best books.  If, since that time, I have come to believe that another one or two books have genuinely supplanted one of those titles then I would absolutely nominate them.  Otherwise, I will probably be a little bit more strategic with these next nominations.

You may remember that my October nominations were ERUPTION!, THE THING ABOUT LUCK, and WHAT THE HEART KNOWS.  None of those have really slipped in my estimation, but there is another group of novels that I have been seriously considering, books that I really liked, especially in light of our vigorous and stimulating conversation here: THE TRUE BLUE SCOUTS OF SUGAR MAN SWAMP, FAR FAR AWAY, and GHOST HAWK.  And, as always, I appreciate a small handful of nontraditional Newbery books: IF YOU WANT TO SEE A WHALE, THE ANIMAL BOOK, WITH A MIGHTY HAND (a retelling of the Torah), and TREASURY OF EGYPTIAN MYTHOLOGY.  Since I’m being somewhat strategic here, I would peek again at the previous list of nominations.

(1) ONE CAME HOME

I can totally get behind TRUE BLUE SCOUTS, but since it’s doing relatively well with 3 votes, I’ll probably pass this time around, and then I still have the option of spending a December nomination on it.  IF YOU WANT TO SEE A WHALE has two nominations while FAR FAR AWAY and GHOST HAWK each only had a single nomination.  They all need more support.  I’m definitely going to spend a nomination on the WHALE book to get it into the middle of the pack, and I’ll use the same wait-and-see strategy for GHOST HAWK and FAR FAR AWAY that I’m using for TRUE BLUE SCOUTS.  That allows me to spend a second nomination on one of my remaining no-chance-in-hell books: THE ANIMAL BOOK, WITH A MIGHTY HAND, and TREASURY OF EGYPTIAN MYTHOLOGY.  I’m obviously quite realistic about the chances of these books, but I so strongly believe that the committee not only needs to consider the breadth of its charge, but they need to bring these kinds of books to the table for actual discussion, that I am willing to spend a precious nomination on one of them.  This is kind of like playing eenie meenie miney mo since I have no previous suggestion list to guide me, but I’m going to go with . . . THE ANIMAL BOOK.

Thus, my five nominations to date include–

THE ANIMAL BOOK

ERUPTION

IF YOU WANT TO SEE A WHALE

THE THING ABOUT LUCK

WHAT THE HEART KNOWS

Please submit your list of five nominations.  Last year I said you couldn’t change your first three (because I wanted to closely mimic the Newbery process), but the reality is that most of us are way behind in our reading when compared to the real committee, so again we are going with the snapshot model.  Give me the five books that you would nominate today, regardless of what you nominated previously.  Go.

I still feel way behind, so I’m not sure I even should nominate (and didn’t last time). But in the spirit of the thing, I’ll go with five good ones I’ve read so far:

    DOLL BONES
    JINX
    THE THING ABOUT LUCK
    HEAVEN IS PAVED WITH OREOS

And for my out in left field nomination to extend people’s thinking:
    THE BOY WHO LOVED MATH

I’m afraid I’m not strongly behind any of these, with Doll Bones being the one I’d probably fight for the hardest. I need to get reading! (Though my favorite book of the year so far, THE SCREAMING STAIRCASE, is not eligible.)

    • Jonathan Hunt says

      November 15, 2013 at 12:16 pm

Sondy, can you talk a little bit more about HEAVEN IS PAVED WITH OREOS? I loved Catherine Gilbert Murdock’s first trilogy of books, and was only recently surprised to learn she’d done a younger book in the same setting. I’m powerfully curious . . .

I have it on my nightstand and haven’t read it yet – if it’s as good as the Dairy Queen trilogy, I’ll have to add it to my December nominations!

      • Sondy says

        November 16, 2013 at 11:35 am

Well, it’s not *quite* as good as the Dairy Queen trilogy. I wouldn’t have nominated it last year. But it’s a nicely written book. Characterization is the strong point. There’s maybe a little artificially much talking about DJ, but Dairy Queen fans should like that.

Sarah is figuring out her relationship with Curtis, and she goes to Italy with her grandmother — good plotting, too.

  6. Hannah says

    November 15, 2013 at 11:41 am

After much debating, I will stick with my original 3 and add 2 more:

    BETTER NATE THAN EVER
    COUNTING BY 7S
    FAR FAR AWAY
    SUGAR
    A TANGLE OF KNOTS

  7. DaNae says

    November 15, 2013 at 12:09 pm

Can I interrupt all this nomination flurry and tell everyone to run and read LOCOMOTIVE before they vote? As clearly, it has not been read widely enough or you would all be laying it down. 🙂

  8. Eric Carpenter says

GHOST HAWK (still not convinced that cultural sensitivity can be shoehorned into the accuracy criteria)
    HOKEY POKEY
    FAR FAR AWAY
DUKE – I know we talked about HATTIE EVER AFTER but I think Larson’s DUKE is a better newbery choice.
    THE YEAR OF BILLY MILLER

    • Debbie Reese says

      November 16, 2013 at 9:35 pm

I shared GHOST HAWK today to an audience that included Wampanoag and Abenaki people, and scholars of both. The venue was a Yale conference on Indigenous Slavery and Incarceration. The audience groaned and laughed at the content of GHOST HAWK. Did my presentation lead the audience in a specific way? It was the same thing I’ve said in these discussions and at my site. The difference is that it was an informed audience familiar with misrepresentations of Indigenous people, and an audience who knows their history and culture. I think their reaction says a lot about the merits of the book.

And I’ll add a couple of low-lying outliers that I think are well as strong as some of those ones (that I’d also support) doing much better. I’ll save my last nominations for throwing more support to those, unless I find something else magical. So:

Just picked up Twerp, and so excited to finally read it. I stopped before I was even 1/3 through it. I am not sure if it is just me, but I am having some problems with it. The writing about the folk tale John Henry, if the reader is young and does not know this tale, can be construed as very offensive. Also, the man with the “Afro” in the car racing segment, turns out to have stolen in! This seems like such a racist stereotype to me. Feedback is appreciated, although I deleted it from our catalog.
