Online Winners!
Here are the results. We had 67 voters, and although BROWN GIRL DREAMING had less than a quarter of those first place votes, it still has almost double the next highest book. It’s much closer on the point spread; it’s got 31 points more than the second book, and it has 31. It’s our clear winner. I’m calling the blue highlighted titles our for-sure Honor books, while the green highlighted titles are those which we might also add. It’s been a long, long time since a committee chose 6 honor books, though, so more than likely REVOLUTION wouldn’t make our cut. We’d probably be discussing 3, 4, or 5 Honor books.

If this were a committee ballot and BROWN GIRL DREAMING really could be called the winner, this could be an example of where the committee decides to re-ballot for honors, rather than using this ballot… The re-ballot would be without BGD, and the committee could also decide to shave as many titles off the bottom or not as they wanted to. (I could see, for instance, that the many 1st place voters for SNICKER and GREENGLASS might try to make a last ditch argument for those, though they don’t seem to have enough votes overall to carry a place in the end.) The idea is that with those votes shifting around, the point spread in the reballot might more clearly indicate a cut off.

19 Rhode island public and school librarians and teachers attended the final selection meeting after three earlier sessions spent narrowing the list. The results (with an overwhelming first choice by 16 participants and 3 second place votes) were:
Mock Newbery Medal:
The Crossover by Kwame Alexander
Mock Newbery Honor Books:
Absolutely Almost by Lisa Graff
The Mark of the Dragonfly by Jaleigh Johnson
Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere by Julie Lamana
The final list included The Night Gardener, The Family Romanov, and Brown Girl Dreaming.

THE MARK OF THE DRAGONFLY is another book that we really should have discussed here. It’s a longish steampunk novel that could be a high Newbery or low Printz. Glad to see your group give the book its just due.

Our Newbery Club doesn’t vote until the Friday before the real winners are announced, so here’s our late entry. I think The Crossover will remain a favorite among elementary students:
Our Mock Newbery Medal goes to: The Crossover
Our four honor awards (in order) are:
El Deafo
Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere
The Port Chicago 50
The Fourteenth Goldfish
The Red Pencil was not on our radar until two weeks ago, but I feel confident it would’ve been in our top five had we known about it earlier.
We’re excited for Monday morning!
