Here is the point breakdown.  You can see that ECHO actually had more 1st place votes, but WAR had more points overall, and lots of 2nd place votes that could have changed into 1st place votes on a second ballot.  Rather than naming a single honor book, we’re climbing the ladder down to include GOODBYE STRANGER and MOST DANGEROUS.

THE WAR THAT SAVED MY LIFE . . . 10 (1st) + 8 (2nd) + 2 (3rd) = 62

ECHO . . . 11 (1st) + 3 (2nd) + 1 (3rd) = 55

GOODBYE STRANGER . . . 4 (1st) + 3 (2nd) + 7 (3rd) = 39

MOST DANGEROUS  . . . 4 (1st) + 6 (2nd) + 2 (3rd) = 38

THE HIRED GIRL . . . 1 (1st) = 3 (2nd) + 3 (3rd) = 19

MY SENECA VILLAGE . . . 2 (1st) + 2 (3rd) =12

DROWNED CITY . . . 1 (1st) +2 (2nd) + 1 (3rd) = 12

THE MARVELS . . . 2 (1st) + 1 (2nd) = 11

THE PENDERWICKS IN SPRING . . . 2 (1st) + 1 (2nd) = 11

LISTEN, SLOWLY . . . 2 (2nd) + 2 (3rd) = 10

I’m feeling a bit lazy this year.  The following books received fewer than 10 points–

CIRCUS MIRANDUS (9)

ORBITING JUPITER (9)

THE THING ABOUT JELLYFISH (9)

ROLLER GIRL (8)

CRENSHAW (7)

GONE CRAZY IN ALABAMA (6)

FULL CICADA MOON (6)

FISH IN A TREE (6)

TURNING 15 ON THE ROAD TO FREEDOM (3)

ENCHANTED AIR (3)

LOST IN THE SUN (3)

A NIGHT DIVIDED (3)

AUDACITY (2)

THE HONEST TRUTH (2)

THE BOYS WHO CHALLENGED HITLER (2)

WISH GIRL (2)

THE DETECTIVE’S ASSISTANT (2)

I’d be totally satisfied with this outcome on Monday.

As much as I want historical fiction to sweep on Monday (The War that Saved My Life, Echo, and The Hired Girl) I know that’s not realistic. I’d be okay with an outcome like this. Though I still think Goodbye Stranger skews too old and that Most Dangerous isn’t Sheinkin’s best work, I’d be willing to overlook both concerns if it meant that The War That Saved My Life and Echo ended up getting the recognition they deserve. Who knows? The Hired Girl might end up with a Printz honor.

I’d also be totally satisfied with Betsy’s predictions.

Wow, we read some really great books this year!! I think I will dance in the street if these books, especially THE WAR THAT SAVED MY LIFE, get the recognition I think they deserve.

Dumbfounded by all this Hired Girl love and was surprised by the O’Dell, which is usually more in line with my own favorites. But I like the look of this mock list. Surely Goodbye, Stranger doesn’t skew any older than The Hired Girl?

Here are the results from Portland Jewish Academy:
    Winner:
    Echo
    Honor Book:
The War That Saved My Life
Our Newbery Club, made-up of 5th-8th graders and several teachers, will be gathering for doughnuts and ALA results early Monday morning. Hurrah for books and the people who are passionate about them!

I’m late getting here. I’m surprised TWTSML is topping so many lists. While I find it an engaging and fun book to read I feel it is far the most distinguished. I did expect it to do better with my students but their choice: ORBITING JUPITER. Honors: GOODBYE STRANGER, ECHO, THE HONEST TRUTH.

Our adult mock: GOODBYE STRANGER. Honors: ECHO & ORBITING JUPITER

Personally, there are about half a dozen books I will be thrilled to see called out come Monday morning.

2nd sentence should read: While I find it an engaging and fun book to read I feel it is far FROM the most distinguished.
