Now up for discussion in our Heavy Medal Mock Newbery: HARRY VERSUS THE FIRST 100 DAYS OF SCHOOL by Emilyl Jenkins, who brings readers into "a classroom with first graders each day, using children's daily conversations."
In THE GENIUS UNDER THE TABLE, Eugene Yelchin's "carefully crafted descriptions, along with his illustrations, paint a vivid picture of a mundane yet harrowing life," according to Heavy Medal Award Committee member Dawn Dvorak. This unique memoir is now up for discussion as part of the Heavy Medal Mock Newbery.
Our Mock Newbery discussion turns to THE BEATRYCE PROPHECY, in which two-time Newbery Medalist Kate DiCamillo "weaves a strong moment in history with almost magical moments and stories within stories." Heavy Medal Award Committee member Aryssa Damron introduces this engaging novel and we invite readers to join in.
Over the next few weeks, members of the Heavy Medal Award Committee will introduce and discuss all 15 titles on our Mock Newbery Book List. Here's a rundown of how the discussions and the balloting will roll out.
Our list of 15 Mock Newbery finalists is complete, but that doesn't mean the eventual winning title is on it. Readers are invited to look beyond that list of 15 and name one book that has a real chance to become the 2022 Newbery Medal winner.
Several review journals have released their "Best Children's Books of the 2021." How do their choices compare to the books we've nominated on Heavy Medal? Is either list a reliable predictor of the real Newbery winners?
Nearly 70 books were nominated by Heavy Medal readers as possible contenders for the 2022 Newbery Medal. We'll use this list to help determined the final titles on our Heavy Medal Book List.
Even in a year full of intense reading, it's impossible for one person to finish every single book with Newbery potential. With a committee of fifteen serious readers, though, the Newbery process still works.
