Goodbye For Now
With the announcement of THE LAST CUENTISTA as the 2022 Newbery Medal Winner at the Youth Media Awards and of course STARFISH as our all-around 2022 Heavy Medal Mock Newbery winner, our season has come to a close.
Thanks to everyone for the thoughtful discussion and welcoming spirits during my first year on the blog. I really enjoyed taking a bigger part in this community and am looking forward to the future.

With that being said, it’s time for a break! I’m going to have another baby (in June!) and stand for the New to ALSC position on the ALSC board (alongside my professional colleague Jaime Eastman). And Steven will enjoy a well-deserved retirement! We’ll see what his big retirement plans are!
In the meantime, we are taking a break but won’t be silent. We’ll build a reading list of the top 2021 title by asking readers to contribute monthly “suggestions.” We’ll do this during the first week of every month from March through September.
Also please let us know general titles you’re looking forward to this year on our last post: Looking Ahead to the 2023 Newbery Medal. I need to fill up my empty bookshelf with titles to read!
Happy Reading and Until Next Time!

As Emily mentioned in her post, I just retired from my position as Library Service Manager at the Wilsonville Public Library. I’ve been a full-time librarian for 35+ years, so I’m looking forward to time at home with family. No big plans for now, but will still be involved in library/book stuff: working as an on-call librarian, writing reviews and articles, maybe some more puppetry workshops or classes…that sort of thing. And of course reading children’s books and discussing them on Heavy Medal!

Congratulations and thanks to you both, Steven and Emily! It’s been really delightful to have a place to read about and discuss Newbery contenders. I value the lively discussion and participation by so many dedicated young peoples’ literature enthusiasts.
