Heavy Medal Mock Newbery Readers’ Poll Results
The votes are in, and it was a close one! 147 voted for their top three titles from our Heavy Medal Book List. We tabulated results using the Newbery formula: Four points for each first place vote, three points for second place, and two points for third place. We wound up with two clear leaders, but no clear winner. Nevertheless, the results are final:
Heavy Medal Reader’s Poll Winner:
- THE OGRESS AND THE ORPHANS by Kelly Barnhill
Heavy Medal Readers’ Poll Honor Books:
- THE LAST MAPMAKER by Christina Soontornvat
- I MUST BETRAY YOU by Ruta Sepetys
- A ROVER’S STORY by Jasmine Warga
- AIN’T BURNED ALL THE BRIGHT by Jason Reynolds
Here’s how close it was at the top: OGRESS received the most first place votes, with 30. MAPMAKER had 25 first place votes. But MAPMAKER received more second and third place votes, so it led the total points race, 193 to 185. In the real Newbery Committee, this would lead to more discussion and a brand new ballot. But since we’re just doing one poll, Emily and I decided to call it for OGRESS. We both felt the first place votes should weigh the heaviest. Complete results are below.

- Heavy Medal Readers’ Poll: THE OGRESS AND THE ORPHANS
Now we just have to wait two days to learn about the one that really matters. The real Newbery Medal, and all of the other youth book and media awards from the American Library Association will be announced on Monday, January 30th at 8:00 am CST.
