Linda Sue Park's PRAIRIE LOTUS is the leading early Newbery Medal contender according to Heavy Medal readers. Several other titles are also getting strong support. 44 titles have received suggestions so far. Check out the current totals through May 10th in this post.
After two months of reader suggestions, the list of potential Newbery contenders features a couple of dozen 2020 titles, but no clear leader. Check out the list so far and keep reading.
Though the past month's events have made it challenging to keep up with current children's literature for many readers, Heavy Medal continues to build our list of contenders for the 2021 Newbery Medal. Readers are invited to contribute to our April list of recommended worthy titles through April 12th.
"Lalani of the Distant Sea" by Erin Entrada Kelly won the Heavy Medal Readers poll by a single vote over Jerry Craft's "New Kid." 125 Heavy Medal readers took part in the poll.

The results of the Heavy Medal Committee's 3rd Mock Newbery ballot are in and we still don't have a clear winner. Results from Ballot #4 will be revealed later today.
The Heavy Medal Readers' Poll is now open. Readers vote for one of our 15 Heavy Medal finalists (or write-in another title). Results will be announced late Sunday.
There are now just six titles remaining as finalists for the Heavy Medal Mock Newbery. Committee Members will continue discussing these titles and submit 3rd ballots soon.
2nd Ballots are in, and still no clear winner of the Heavy Medal Mock Newbery. Committee members will now decide how many of the contenders should remain on Ballot #3, which will go out soon
After weeks of rigorous book discussion, the Heavy Medal Committee has voted for the 2020 Mock Newbery book. And the winner is....not decided. No book emerged as a clear winner, so look for more intense book discussion today, followed by a second ballot.
