Though the past month's events have made it challenging to keep up with current children's literature for many readers, Heavy Medal continues to build our list of contenders for the 2021 Newbery Medal. Readers are invited to contribute to our April list of recommended worthy titles through April 12th.
Heavy Medal readers submitted their first lists of potential 2021 Newbery contenders. The early leaders feature a the true story of a famous pilot and a novel about a girl trying to connect with her imprisoned father.
The 2021 Newbery winners won't be announced for 10 months, but on Heavy Medal we're asking readers to "suggest" early 2020 titles that might just have a shot at being named "the most distinguished" book of the year.
The winners have been announced. It was fun and wonderful to see how HMC were in sync with the Newbery Committee. Great job everyone!

After weeks of rigorous book discussion, the Heavy Medal Committee has voted for the 2020 Mock Newbery book. And the winner is....not decided. No book emerged as a clear winner, so look for more intense book discussion today, followed by a second ballot.
Heavy Medal Committee member Alissa describes Neal Shusterman's "The Toll" as"a novel that combines all of the elements of an award-winner..." Is this highly popular fantasy a true Newbery contender?
In her introduction to "Scary Stories for Young Foxes," Heavy Medal Committee member Courtney Hague describes how "eight scary stories... are deftly strung together to give the reader an overarching tale of two young foxes fighting for their lives, their families, and each other. " This novel by Christian McKay Heidicker is up for discussion on today's Heavy Medal's Mock Newbery.
